Android 1.6 and G1

Anyone into modding Android? I've got the 1.6 update but having a hard time learning if it's rootable since they fixed the BT exploit.

your best bet is reading the xda-developers forums they have a section for android stuff now. I believe Cyanogen is still making custom roms that are supposed to greatly improve the speed of the G1.

I'll know more after this weekend about modding an android phone. Getting rid of ATT and going with Sprint and snagging an HTC Hero probably tomorrow.

I've done several windows mobile phones to winmo 6.5. If it's anything like that, it's pretty easy.

Still wondering how I can root the HTC sprint hero that I got. it's on 1.5, but I'm not sure if being a CDMA phone that will cause issues.

I think 1.6 is still "under development" on a hack for it. Also, how do you like having Android? I'm waiting on VZW to drop one out on their network, as I refuse to have ATT, and Sprint has bad coverage in my area.

Ya, the "1-Click" method to root has been patched for 1.6... you've gotta downgrade (RC29 is what I did) before you can root.

I've been all over the XDA forums for weeks now, but I don't know a lot of the tech speak they are using.

I've successfully installed Cyanogen Mod on my dev phone, but I really want to try a Hero ROM.

Problem is, I've gotta partition my SD card, and I'm having a hard time figuring out how to do that.

And I love Android. I love that it syncs so effortlessly with my Google shit.

Been following this. The iPhone fanbois are in an uproar about it. I'm hoping that the Droid is the answer to my Storm vs. Tour quandary. Hardware qwerty keyboard and big touchscreen in one smartphone, in addition to its other charms.

Droid is fucking awesome.

However...

I want a handset with a physical keyboard, Snapdragon processor, running Android 2.0, and on T-Mobile.

Give me that, and I'd be a happy mofo.

I'm pretty disappointed really in TMO's offerings. G1 was awesome... last year. MT3G, meh. Cliq... better... and that's it. There have been no rumors of the next TMO Android phone. VZW however, has at least 3 lined up under the Droid program.

Also: Figured out how to root this G1, and install a custom Hero ROM on it. Pretty bad ass when you get into the workings of this stuff. There is opportunity for TONS of customization.

I'm not saying their coverage is great, hell, even good but if you happen to be in one of those areas and don't really travel outside that area much, what does it matter?

I've been with TMO for years (at least 6), and they have good 3G coverage in the Seattle/Tacoma area... plus, compared to other plans the price is OK.

Protip: Get a Google Voice number, install the app on your Android phone, add it as one of your 5 Faves/calling circle/whatever, give out that number instead of your cell number... UNLIMITED MINUTES, BOOYA!

Pretty much everything I've read basically says that the Droid is great with the exceptions of the hardware kb being meh and the camera being absolute shit. I've seen the sound quality reviewed as stellar. Android 2.0 gets consistent high marks, though. I'm considering the Storm 2 vs. Droid. Depends on how much it'll cost my employer per month.
