I have the cash burning a hole in my wallet and my 360 is 280 miles north of me. I'm needing a fix and heavily considering using my $150 best buy store credit towards a PS3 purchase.

My brother and our friends all have 360s... I enjoy xbox live. I don't enjoy paying for it.

At this point in the race, is there anything the PS3 can do in terms of media sharing/serving/streaming that the 360 cannot do? 360 will be gaining access to Hulu via Win7 MC is the rumor I hear...

How is the ps3's performance vs 360? Have they passed xbox over in the graphics department yet? Have any games that take advantage of the hardware differential?

If not... Are there rumors that this may ever happen? For instance, all things being equal if Madden or CoD2 looks better on the PS3, then I'd probably get the PS3 versions... That is unless:

Facts I'm aware of-
PS3 Controller is win for fighters
PS3 has bluray and I mildly care since the future of media is streaming not physical disks and while I respect those that DO, I DO NOT get off on perfect hd sound or picture, I'd much rather have 4TB of 720p movies in AAC than a $1500 bluray library.
PS3 has MGS, Gran Turismo, and a couple other exclusives that aren't as important to me (Final Fantasy has decided to go multiplatform, correct?)

Ultimately, there isn't going to be that much difference between the games. Some games may have better textures or frame rates on one system, but generally the difference is going to be minimal. If you're expecting some major difference between the two systems in graphics then my advice is to not expect that. I read a quote recently by a developer that says the true potential of the PS3 is still a few years away from being reached, but it's not like they've only unlocked 10% of the power of it so far. The systems are from the same generation with mostly similar technology, there's not going to be a ton of difference. The biggest difference is the PS3 is not as easy to code for, but as time goes by developers are getting the hang of it.



Don't know. It's free. There's friends lists, messaging, chat. I've never heard anyone say the PS3's online experience is better than Xbox's, but I can't recall anyone saying it's miles behind either. Ultimately, to me, it comes down to how the games decide to handle how they run online. Some do a better job than others. In general, there's things that could be better, but there's nothing I find myself pissed off about with the experience. My friends also aren't into gaming much/at all so I rarely do any kind of party system when gaming.




If you're expecting some kind of radical difference in performance/eye candy you're gonna be SOL. You don't seem to care about the major difference in hardware (Blu-ray). Sounds like it comes down to games. You either want to play the exclusives enough to buy one, or you don't, imo.

Honestly, a lot of the PS3 exclusives don't appeal to me that much, but nowadays most games don't appeal to me that much (There's no 360 exclusive I'm upset about not being able to play). I guess I'm getting old? But Uncharted, Uncharted 2, and MGS4 are all spectacular games. Killzone 2 is good, but I don't know how strong the online community is anymore (don't play anymore). I had no desire to play the single player campaign through more than once, either. Little Big Planet is awesome but short on developer content, imo, and the user generated content doesn't match up almost all of the time. Although I believe they have a new GOTY edition that is $40 or something. Definitely worth it. I haven't played LBP in a loooong time but I don't regret dropping $60 on it. Valkyria Chronicles is good, but has a few slight issues regarding AI that bothered me. A lot of people have a boner for this game. I'm not huge into tactical games as it is, and I would have regretted paying full price for this one. But at half off it was worth it.

That's pretty much my experience with PS3 exclusives.

Edit: Transferring edit files for Pro Evolution Soccer is a lost easier on PS3 than on 360. I'm sure that's a major concern for you.

for what its worth, i owned a ps3 for about 7 months. i bought it in 2007 and sold it in 2008 for a pretty nice return. seems the hardware accelerated ps1/ps2 emulation was worth a pretty penny to a nerd who lived in my town at the time.

anyhow, i noticed while owning the system that - at that time - the online for sports titles was better implemented in the xbox versions. i would rent each and came to that conclusion rather objectively. whether it was the lobby or other aspects, it always seemed less "face palm" when i would game on the 360.

now, that was a whlie back and i have no reason not to believe sony could have worked out the kinks... since the troubles seemed to be software related.

/shrug maybe i just wait for the jonzing to wear off.

It also won't RROD every six months. This is a downside if you like to stroke MS's dick while waiting for your game machine to come back from the manufacture.

We have a program that can stream movies better than TVersity with very little setup unless your name is kak. All I had to do was tell it I had a quad core. You don't even have to do that but it will stream better if you do.

We will be getting Netflix this month. We have to have a disc in the PS3 while streaming because of some bullshit exclusivity MS has until next year. This is a negative so ignore this one.

Other than that its your call. I love streaming movies in 1080P with 5.1 sound from my comp like its no thing. Starship Troopers looks awesome on Bluray. I like to know that my machine isn't a ticking time bomb waiting to go off. I like knowing that the exclusives we do get will blow anything the 360 has to offer. I will put UC2 to the Pepsi Challenge against anything the 360 has or will have.

To be fair I own a Jasper chipset console and I don't play for more than 20hours a week at maximum nerd (probably 8-12 weeks a year at best), I've owned this one for 13 months now, no complaints. I sold my original 360 pro to my brother who immediately had it stolen, but it made it a long time. i'm thinking alot of the rrod's are due to poor ventilation or running the box for 8 hours at a time or something. but yes, improved hardware quality is a plus

what program? is this better than windows media center or the zune software? because i hear that integrates kinda well, tho i haven't messed with it due to my alcoholism and temporary lack of a permanent residence...

Hulu will work with PlayOn, which will go on sale every now and then. I tried the demo and it actually works fantastic, full screen. Not HD IIRC, but still, pretty solid.

That being said, isn't there talks of Hulu going subscription?

Got my Netflix disc today. Its pretty cool. Nothing I can't do with my computer but now I don't have a reason to have my cpu hooked up to my TV since streaming Netflix was the only thing I needed it for these days. If you have a PS3 and Netflix I highly recommend.

JoeMama - I fixed my issue with PS3MS. I think the default media extender in Win 7 was conflicting with it on the same port. I changed the port PS3MS operated on and it popped up immediately.

And get the newer system. It uses much less electricity, runs cooler, is nearly silent (from what I've read), and it will bitstream DTS-MA/Dolby TrueHD. It looks a little tacky compared to the original design, but it is under half the size.

I've been wanting to get the Slim but I have a shit load of shared accounts for games that is too much of a hassle to deactivate then reactivate on the new system.

I've never had cooling problems and never hear my PS3 but the only thing that was interesting to me was the better sound options. Its not enough for me to do the upgrade considering the hassle. It already sounds awesome and I'm not some audiophile who will notice a slight sound change.

From what I understand, its all a difference of having your receiver do the decoding versus the PS3. From a technical standpoint, the 1s and 0s should be the same.

I wish it supported Wireless N.
