I don't have any of the 'cold-weather' related stuff, but I do have 2 gal of water, oil, rainX, (in the diesel I carry lucas fuel treatment, you never know when the fuel driver will forget to put the additive in the fuel & fuck up your pump....).....tools is a whole-nother she-bang:
- full metric from 7~21 with multiples of the common VW sizes / full 1/4" driver S&K socket set w/ extensions / full metric socket set from 8~21 in 3/8" & some of the major ones in 1/2" along with a 3/8->1/2 adapter / a plethora of screwdrivers & pliers & other such specialty items (magnet, oil wrench, pipe pliers, punches, chizels, etc) / spare bolts, nuts, washers, vacuum hoses, wires, relays, full electrical repairs kit, volt/ohm meter, spare clutch cable w/ the bottom piece / spare lights / fuses / asst belts / floor jack / 1 jack stand / jumper cables / 120psi truck compressor / canned air.....
...that's about it.....& I have all that stuffed into 2 Konnex boxes, 1 used laptop bag, and an old 1-piece toolbox, and an old drumstick bag (GREAT for screwdrivers and long skinny shit). It all compacts nicely and while I probably have ~75lbs worth of shit (or more), its worth it to be prepared. And when I have my PC-repair shit with me, I also have a mobile setup that rivals my shop in tools- and I carry a pretty good selection of parts that I may need in the field: PSs, hdds, enclosures, CDRWs, DVDRWs, cards, RAM, NICs, etc...& since I do networking, I have the spool of CAT5, w/ all my *other* electrical shit....
...reminds me of a night a few years ago when I was delivering for Papa Johns....my clutch cable snapped on a delivery, so I called the mgr real quick (I was already under the car with spare in-hand) letting her know I'd be a bit late on the delivies. She was most surprised that I not only *had* a spare, but that I'd only be 10 min late (was more like 7, but who's nit-picking), and she said to me: "Semper Fi".
Most people don't even carry water.
====================
Sorry I'm long-winded on this, I just got done changing the 16v out of my '87 Scirocco and putting in a spare 8v my dad's not using. My 16v has been leaking oil in a few places, the cam chain's loose, and there are a few other things that need to be addressed with it....and I don't like being without a 'fast' roc, since I'm back in the 50hp diesel Scirocco again. I will say this about these -ass VWs, even in my 'heavy' '87, I still got ~30mpg on the way home (and the diesel's still getting 40+). Now I need a clutch for the other '82, some TLC for the Sportruck, a restoration on the MKI S, and a shell swap with something that doesn't leak as bad as my diesel shell. Anyways......wrenching for yourself is cool, 'cause you know its done RIGHT, and you know HOW ITS DONE.
